Time Period Requirement

Pre-1700 & 1700-1900 Requirements

Please note: This requirement applies to all first- and second -year students in the following degree programs effective Fall/Winter 2014, and all majors and minors in English thereafter.

Students majoring or minoring in English are required to take a minimum number of credits in courses focusing on literature from before the 20th century. Such courses fall into two Time Periods:

I) pre-18th century literature (from before 1700), and

II) pre-20th century literature (from between 1700 and 1900)

Students should fulfill this requirement within the overall number of credits required for their English degree.

Students pursuing Honours BAs with English as a Minor, or Regular BAs, must take at least 3 credits overall in courses from either Time Period I or II.

Students pursuing Honours BAs, Honours Double Major BAs, Honours Double Major Interdisciplinary BAs, or Honours Major/Minor BAs, must take at least 3 credits in courses from Time Period I and at least 3 credits in courses from Time Period II.

Students pursuing Specialized Honours BAs must take at least 9 credits in courses from Time Period I and II overall – they may satisfy this requirement by taking either:

a) at least 6 credits from Time Period I and at least 3 credits from Time Period II, or

b) at least 3 credits from Time Period I and at least 6 credits from Time Period II.

In short, Minors and Regular BAs may satisfy this requirement by accumulating at least 3 credits in courses from Time Periods I or II. Honours and Specialized Honours BAs must take courses in both Time Periods I and II. Honours BAs must take at least 6 credits across the two periods. Specialized Honours BAs must take at least 9 credits across the two periods.

Students should check the course lists of the two Time Periods to choose courses that satisfy this requirement and to see whether their previously completed courses satisfy this requirement.
